Piano Maintenance, Repair and Restoration

As with any mechanical device, pianos will at time need maintenance for repair or restoration. It is not unusual for our staff to be called upon for tuning and discover the real cause of sour notes is a broken, worn or misaligned component. We are experienced to serve as your advisor and maintainer for a range of piano problems.

Efforts and complexity

Our technicians view maintenance and repair efforts in 3 levels.

Minor efforts

Basic or routine work can be done at the customer location and involves adjustment or part replacement with no significant disassembly or change to the piano structure. The work includes:

  • standard tuning
  • simple pitch raise
  • voicing or minor regulation
  • replacing one or few broken strings
  • tightening loose screws
  • lubricating sticky parts
  • minor adjustment to damper or pedal

Moderate repairs

Moderate repairs require partial disassembly of the piano or parts replacement. Typical tasks are:

  • full action regulation
  • multiple replacements of hammers, strings, or tuning pins
  • keytop replacement

We will advise if these procedures will take more than one visit, or if there is a need to move the piano to our shop.

Major repairs or restoration

These repairs will involve work on piano structure, requiring its relocation to a workshop. Depending on the level of work, equipment needs, and facility requirements, such work may be done in Rochester or require the piano be sent to one of our trusted craftsmen around the USA. These efforts are usually part of a rebuild or restoration effort, including:

  • pinblock or soundboard replacement
  • complete restringing
  • action rebuilding
  • damper replacement
  • cabinet refinishing

We view a rebuild as extensive work on structural components of the piano which resets the instrument lifespan and restores original performance. Your decision after hearing our recommendations depends on your assessment of the piano’s value and your plans for its future.

At all levels of mainenance and repair, Rosenberg Piano Service provides you expert evaluation of needs, clear explanation of recommended work, and honest assessment of cost and time involved, so that you can make an informed and confident decision.
